A24 and filmmaker Alex Garland have locked a release date for their live-action Elden Ring movie, with production already underway and a full cast now announced. The adaptation of FromSoftware’s 30-million-selling game will open in theaters on March 3, 2028, filmed for and released in IMAX.

Who is making it
Alex Garland, the writer-director behind Ex Machina and Civil War, spent years building this project. The New Yorker has reported he wrote a roughly 160-page draft script with 40 extra pages of imagery on his own initiative, then flew to Japan to pitch FromSoftware. Sources say the film is created under the guidance of Hidetaka Miyazaki and is based on the mythological story Martin wrote for the game.
Martin has voiced support for the adaptation, calling Garland a “first rate director” and A24 a “kickass” production company. The Hollywood Reporter has described Elden Ring as A24’s most ambitious project yet, with a budget well over $100 million.

Character roles have not been announced. The announcement follows a month of leaked set photos, including what fans described as a game-accurate statue of Marika and the hanging pylons seen across Limgrave. A trailer has not yet been released.
