A testing floor that was built for PC opens up to consoles

Fallout 76 launched in 2018 and has run as a live-service game for nearly eight years. Bethesda’s PTS lets players into a beta build ahead of the main game, where new features can be stress-tested and refined. Until now, joining it required a PC copy of the game.

The console rollout is tied to the scale of an incoming current-gen update. Bethesda has said the new build targets 60 FPS on every current-generation platform, and adds variable refresh rate (VRR) support on compatible displays across PS5, PS5 Pro, Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S.

What the update brings on each console

Resolution targets vary by hardware. Xbox Series X supports 4K on compatible displays, the PS5 Pro runs 4K on compatible displays, and the standard PS5 targets 1440p. Xbox Series S runs at a standard resolution. All three, plus the PS5 Pro, target 60 FPS with VRR support. Previous-generation systems continue to run at 1080p without these enhancements, according to Bethesda.

The full roll-out date for the update on the main game has not been confirmed. Bethesda is using the console PTS window to gather data and make sure the build is stable before it reaches everyone.

Watch: What the videos show

The console testing push follows a longer rollout for the game’s native current-gen versions. In this video, creator Darth Xion explains how Bethesda’s native Xbox Series X/S and PS5 plans were originally due to arrive over the summer, and why testing on console ended up moving a little later in the schedule.

As the transcript shows, Bethesda had laid out plans to ship native Xbox Series X/S and PlayStation 5 versions of the game over the summer, but hit delays on the testing timetable. That background explains why the console PTS is only now opening to players, ahead of the full current-gen update.

Frequently asked questions

How do I join the Fallout 76 PTS on PS5 and Xbox?

The PTS is a separate download from the main game. On Xbox Series X|S and PS5, you download that build directly from your console’s store, then launch it to take part. No special invitation is needed.

Does PTS progress carry over to the main game?

No. Progress made in the PTS does not carry over to the live game. Treat the PTS as a separate testing environment rather than an extension of your normal save.

Is the PTS now available on PC too?

Yes. PC players have had access to the PTS for years. Today’s change extends that same testing program to PS5 and Xbox Series X|S for the first time.

What does the current-gen update actually change?

Bethesda lists native performance improvements, including a target of 60 frames per second across current-generation platforms and VRR support on compatible displays, with higher resolution targets on Xbox Series X and PS5 Pro.

When will the full update reach all players?

Bethesda has not announced a firm date. The console PTS window is being used to gather data and confirm stability before the update ships to the main game.
